Welcome to fall and football is in the air!  Check out all the great things to do this weekend.  Enjoy – you deserve it!

Litlle Village Mexican Independence Parade

1. Little Village Mexican Independence Parade

  • When:   September 8, 2019 at starting at noon.
  • Where:  Little Village, 26th St from Albany Ave to Kostner Ave, Chicago, IL 60623.

Why this is fun:  Little Village’s Mexican Independence Parade turns 50 this year, taking over a portion of 26th Street in the historically Hispanic neighborhood. The theme of this year’s procession is “Celebrando Raices,” celebrating the indigenous roots of the people who call Little Village home. The parade runs between Kedzie and Kostner on 26th Street.

2. Swerski’s: A Chicago Pop-Up for Superfans

  • When:  Starting September 5, 2018 thru the end of the season.
  • Where:  Timothy O’Toole’s, 622 N Fairbanks Ct, Chicago, IL 60611.

Why this is fun:  Hoookay, so if you’re a fan of Da Bears you’ve got a couple two tree reasons to be excited this week. First off, the season kicks off Thursday against who else but the Packers. In other news, Timothy O’Toole’s in River North will also be turning into Swerski’s for the length of the football season—a pop-up themed bar honoring the beloved Superfans skit from Saturday Night Live. Watch all the games here this year! Visit Thursdays and Fridays starting at 530 pm thru Saturdays and Sundays starting at 11am.

German American Oktoberfest

3. German-American Oktoberfest

  • When:  September 6-8, 2019 – Friday from 5pm to 11pm, 8pm Opening Ceremony, Saturday – Noon to 11pm, Sunday – Noon to 10pm.
  • Where:  2312 W Leland Ave, Chicago, IL 60625.

Why this is fun:  Grab a plastic stein and munch on a pretzel at this annual Lincoln Square celebration of Deutschland heritage, which kicks off Oktoberfest season in Chicago. The street party takes place under two gigantic tents and features plenty of German food, music and dancing. Make sure to stop by to see the annual Von Steuben Parade march up Lincoln Avenue on Saturday, September 7 at 2pm.

Chicago Bike Revolution

4. Chicago Bike Revolution

  • When:  September 7, 2019 from 1 pm to 10 pm.
  • Where:  Humboldt Park Boathouse, 1359 N Sacramento Blvd, Chicago, IL 60622.

Why this is fun:   New Belgium Brewing’s Tour de Fat event is taking a year off, so West Town Bikes is teaming up with Revolution Brewing to present a new beer and biking festival in its stead. It looks pretty familiar: there’s a bik parade to kick off the day, plenty of cold beverages to enjoy, an appearance from local marching band Mucca Pazza and a stacked list of local musicians taking the stage throughout the afternoon. Soulful duo the O’My’s headline the day’s festivities, with support from singer/rapper/saxophonist Sen Morimoto, psych rock collective Glad Rags, poct-punk act Negative Scanner and synth-pop outfit Little Church. Proceeds from the event keep West Town Bikes’ classes and youth programs rolling year-round.

Birdhouse Festival

5. Birdhouse Festival

  • When:  September 7, 2019 at 3 pm.
  • Where:  Theater on the Lake. 2401 N Lake Shore Dr, Chicago, IL 60614.

Why this is fun:  The audio avians from San Francisco’s bass-happy electronic music label Dirtybird bring the Birdhouse Festival to Chicago, featuring an extended headlining performance from head honcho Claude VonStroke as well as a B2B set with Chicago’s own Paul Johnson. Other acts on the bill include Walker & Royce, Mason Maynard, Chambray vs. DJ Deeon and VNSSA. It all takes place on the grass outside of Theatre on the Lake, where attendees will enjoy great views of the skyline on what will probably be one of the final nice weekends of the summer.
