Sam Adams Lakeview Taco Fest

1. Sam Adams Lakeview Taco Fest

  • When:   September 21-22, 2019 – 11am until 10pm.

Why this is fun: For one weekend each fall, Southport Corridor becomes a mecca for taco lovers in Chicago during the Sam Adams Lakeview Taco Fest. More than a dozen restaurants (including Beat Kitchen, Tied House, Taco Joint and Taqueria Arceo) offer their take on the tortilla-wrapped dish, serving delicious creations throughout the weekend. You’ll also be able to take in lucha libre wrestling (every day at 5pm) and performances from local bands and tribute acts on one of two stages at the fest.

Chicago Architecture Biennial

2. Chicago Architecture Biennial

  • When: September 19, 2019 – January 5, 2020. Opening hours: Mon–Thu 9am–7pm; Fri 9am–6pm; Sat 9am–6pm; Sun 10am–6pm.
  • Where: Chicago Cultural Center, 78 E Washington St, Chicago IL 60602.

Why this is fun: Every two years, Chicago becomes the center of the world of architecture and design during the Chicago Architecture Biennial. Taking place over the course of nearly four months, the programming encompasses exhibitions, installations, forums and more events that explore the state of modern architecture and urbanism. The Chicago Cultural Center serves as the event’s hub, where visitors can explore a large model of a traditional Chicago worker’s cottage, experience a multi-channel video installation and learn about the architecture present in cities such as São Paulo, Vancouver and Johannesburg. Venues like the Jane Addams Hull-House Museum and the National Public Housing Museum also host Biennial programming, in addition to partner programs at a variety of local institutions. Kizuki Japanese Matsuri Festival

3. Kizuki Japanese Matsuri Festival

  • When: September 20-22, 2019 – Fri 3-8pm, Sat 11-8pm, Sun 11-5pm.
  • Where: NEWCITY Plaza, 1457 N Halsted St, Chicago IL 60642.

Why this is fun: Kizuki Ramen & Izakaya and the Japanese Culture Center team up to present a traditional Japanese festival at the NEWCITY shopping center, complete with food and entertainment. Kizuki will be serving traditional dishes like chicken karaage on a stick, takoyaki (Japanese octopus dumpling), potato croquettes, gyoza and pork chashu don throughout the three-day event. On Saturday and Sunday, you’ll also be able to take a tour of the Kizuki restaurant and make your own ramen creation for $20. A stage at the festival will host taiko drumming, cosplaying, sword demonstrations, calligraphy performances and live music.

Catcade Carnival

  • Where: Off Color Brewing’s Mousetrap, 1460 N Kingsbury St, Chicago IL 60642.

Why this is fun: Come play some games, hang with friends, and Leo at Off Color Brewing’s Taproom. Help us raise money to help save even more cats! We will have cat-themed carnival games, tarot readings by Megan Lynn Kott, hangs with Chris, Shelly, Adam Myatt (the Catman of West Oakland), and Christine (Rescue in Style)! There will be pizza, snacks, and all sorts of weirdness.

Included with ticket purchase are 2 drinks (alcoholic or non-alcoholic), pizza and snacks, tickets to play games, and tarot readings by Megan Lynn Kott.

MIdwest Flair Fest

5. Midwest Flair Fest

  • When:  September 22, 2019 – 11am to 4pm (FREE!).
  • Where:  Thalia Hall – 1807 S Allport St, Chicago IL 60608.

Why this is fun: Find new patches, pins and other wearable art to decorate your jackets and bags at the Midwest Flair Fest, where more than 50 vendors will be selling their wares. You’ll find patches and pins that reference pop culture, politics, comedy and more—and if you’re one of the first 50 people through the door, you’ll get a free swag bag.
