1. Bud Billiken Parade

  • When:   August 10, 2019 at 10:00 am.
  • Where:  Martin Luther King Drive from 35th to 55th, Chicago IL 60616.

Why this is fun:  It’s the 90th edition of the world’s largest and oldest African-American parade, which celebrates Chicago’s youth just before the school year begins. Hundreds of thousands of attendees line the streets to see colorful floats, marching bands and talented dance and drill teams. The parade’s two-mile route begins in the Bronzeville neighborhood and continues north on Dr. Martin Luther King Drive, concluding in Washington Park with a picnic that features vendors and performers.

2. Chicago Hot Dog Fest

  • When:  August 9-11, 2019, daily from 11:00 am to 9:00 pm.
  • Where:  Lincoln Park – Stockton at LaSalle, Chicago IL 60610.

Why this is fun:  Let’s be frank: The Chicago-style hot dog is a quintessential part of Chicago’s storied history. The Chicago History Museum organizes this celebration of one of the city’s most famous dishes, serving creative dogs from some of our favorite local stands. While you’re chowing down on neon green relish and sport peppers, you can listen to live music or attend a lecture that will teach you about the history of the Chicago-style hot dog.

3. Stan’s Donut 5K

  • When:  August 10, 2019 – 7:00 am.
  • Where:  Soldier Field, 1410 S Museum Campus Dr, Chicago IL 60605.

Why this is fun:  Stan’s Donuts sponsors this family-friendly 5K, which challenges runners to complete the course while consuming lots of treats along the way. With doughnut stations positioned at every mile of the course, you’ll probably be full by the time you cross the finish line and claim your pastry-shaped medal and cold brew. The race takes place along a section of the Lakefront Trail just south of Soldier Field.

4. Herbie Hancock + Kamasi Washington

  • When:  August 10, 2019 at 6:30 pm.
  • Where:  Huntington Bank Pavilion – Museum Campus, 1300 S Linn White Dr, Chicago IL 60605.

Why this is fun:   Jazz icon Herbie Hancock returns to his native Chicago, where he began his music education as a classical pianist before performing with the likes of Donald Byrd and Miles Davis. In the 1970s, Hancock was best known for adding synthesizers to his sonic palette, drawing inspiration from funk, soul and traditional African music.

For the past few years, Hancock has been working on a new record with hip-hop producer Terrance Martin, which reportedly features collaborations with Kendrick Lamar, Snoop Dogg and Flying Lotus. At Northerly Island, he’ll share the bill with saxophonist and bandleader Kamasi Washington, who has become known for his expansive albums that channel the adventurous spirit of jazz musicians like Hancock.

5. Retro on Roscoe

  • When:  August 9-11, 2019 – Friday 5:00 pm – 10:00 pm, Saturday & Sunday 12:00pm – 10:00 pm.
  • Where:  3400 N Damen Ave, Chicago IL 60618.

Why this is fun:  Retro on Roscoe features Chicago’s top talent and entertainment on three main stages. Artisans, antique vendors, and cool merchants will provide a shopping experience that is second to none. Local restaurants fill the venue with summertime samplings and tasty treats. All this and more liven up this tree-lined street for an enjoyable three-day festival that brings back great memories while providing excellent entertainment for the entire family.

Retro’s Antique Car Show will showcase over 50 antique, classic and muscle cars throughout the weekend at the festival.
