Jazz Fest

1. Chicago Jazz Fest

Why this is fun: The oldest of Chicago’s free lakefront music festivals boasts an incredibly diverse lineup during its carefully curated 10 days, which includes free neighborhood concerts leading up to the main show at Millennium Park. The range of artists comprising the Chicago Jazz Festival runs the gamut from jazz legends to influential modern masters and crucial new voices in the genre’s continuing evolution.

The 41st rendition of the free-admission festival will include a special tribute to Nat King Cole by his brother Freddy Cole and a celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the Jazz Institute of Chicago, the festival’s programming partner.

An all-ages, multi-venue music event, the Chicago Jazz Festival brings free jazz to downtown’s beautiful Millennium Park, as well as inside the nearby Chicago Cultural Center.

2. The Oddities Flea Market

  • When:  August 24 and 25, 2019, 12pm-6pm.
  • Where:  Stan Mansion 2408 N. Kedzie Blvd, Chicago, IL 60647.

Why this is fun: Join us at the grandiose Stan Mansion for the Oddities Flea Market, a curious, curated collection of the best purveyors of the odd and unique. Hailing from Brooklyn, this is an affair you won’t want to miss.

Feast your eyes on medical history ephemera, anatomical curiosities, natural history items, osteological specimens, taxidermy, obscure home decor, jewelry, one-of-a-kind dark art, and more. This absolutely awe-inspiring market of the most incredible, unique oddities is taking up residence at the former Masonic lodge on August 24th and 25th. Inside, you’ll find rows and rows of unusual vendors from across the country, hand-picked by curator Ryan Matthew Cohn.

3. Bucktown Arts Fest

  • When:  August 24 and 25, 2019 11am-7pm.
  • Where:  2200 N Oakley Avenue, Chicago, IL 60647.

Why this is fun: Celebrating its 30th year in 2019, the Bucktown Arts Fest is a neighborhood tradition and one of Chicago’s premier arts festivals showcasing close to 200 juried artists who work in oil, watercolor, photography, textile, sculpture, jewelry and so much more. Attracting more than 30,000 visitors annually, we also focus on making art free to the public hosting two music stages, dancers, poets & performers, arts activities for kids, food trucks (as of 2015!) and craft beer and sangria. The Bucktown Arts Fest is a non-profit, all volunteer-run with no paid staff, celebration of the arts with no corporate sponsorship. Admission is free. All proceeds from the Fest go to fund, develop and support arts education programming at Holstein Park and in Bucktown classrooms.

4. Midnight Circus in the Park

Why this is fun: Midnight Circus in the Parks is an eclectic ensemble of artists with a shared vision that live performance has the power to engage and inspire our audience, our community, and our world. We bring world‐class contemporary circus performances to communities throughout Chicago and raise money for Chicago parks with the proceeds.

Born in 2007, Midnight Circus in the Parks brings an intimate, exciting, world-class circus to the heart of every community it plays. MCITP was founded on the belief that community involvement is the foundation on which to build long‐term success with positive effects lasting well beyond a two‐hour performance. To that end, all performances are affordable, accessible, and provide a platform for community groups to volunteer, fundraise and become active arts participants.

5. Wizard World Chicago Comic Con
